From Failed Attempts to Final Success – A Real Experience
Getting a driving license in Sweden isn’t just a task — it’s a journey, and for many like me, it comes with challenges, setbacks, and ultimately success. I want to share my full experience, from my first driving lessons to the day I proudly held my Swedish B driving license in hand.
Step 1: First Attempt – Manual Transmission & First Failure. When I first started, I chose to learn with a manual car. Like many others, I thought it would give me more flexibility and options in the future. But reality hit hard. Even after hours of practice, the gear shifting, clutch control, and hill starts stressed me out. I failed my first driving test. It was disappointing and frustrating — but I didn’t give up.
Step 2: Studying the Theory Sweden’s theory test is not easy, especially if Swedish isn’t your first language. I realized that passing the theory exam would require serious preparation. Here’s what helped me most: I purchased iKörkort Theory App (around 300 SEK): Clear explanations, great for beginners. I also invested in Körkort.online (about 400 SEK for one year): It had thousands of practice questions, just like the real exam I studied daily — sometimes just 20–30 minutes, sometimes longer. It was like learning a new language, full of traffic signs, road rules, and safety guidelines.
Step 3: Driving Lessons – School vs Private. I practiced with both a driving school and a private supervisor. Each helped me in a different way. Driving School, Professional instructors taught me: Proper mirror checks, How to do a perfect roundabout, Parking techniques (especially in tight city areas). Yes, it was expensive, but worth every krona. Private Driving (Handledare). Driving with a private person (supervised driving) gave me: Real-life road experience, Flexibility to practice at my own pace, More confidence behind the wheel. If you’re going this route, make sure your handledare (supervisor) is registered and you’ve both completed the introduction course.
Step 4: Switching to Automatic – A Game Changer. After failing again with manual, I made a bold decision: Switch to automatic transmission. Many say “manual is better” — but for me, automatic was freedom. I focused on road awareness, traffic signs, and smooth driving — instead of worrying about the clutch and gears. On my next try, I passed the driving test! It was one of the happiest moments of my life.
What I Learned: It’s okay to fail. Learn from it and adapt, Manual isn’t for everyone. Automatic is 100% valid and accepted. Practice is everything. Mix driving school with private lessons, Study smart. Invest in good theory apps, Believe in yourself. The Swedish license is tough, but not impossible.
Getting a Swedish driving license is one of the hardest but most rewarding things I’ve done. It gave me independence, new job opportunities, and a sense of pride. If you’re struggling — keep going. You’re not alone. Your license might be just one more try away.
